As the first Remote Laundries project to launch on Groote Eylandt, the Angurugu community has welcomed this important addition, with the laundry recently reaching a significant milestone of 10,000 cycles!
Seven local team members keep the cycles spinning, and the continued demand for the laundry shows that it is a valued service to the community, both as a place to wash clothes and to work.
This
year, our Angurugu laundry has proactively trialled new initiatives to ensure
the laundry is accessible to all community members.
In February, a free pick-up and drop-off started with laundry staff accessing a fun, branded Remote Laundries van to collect washing from around the community.
More recently, a collaboration between Groote Eylandt Aboriginal Trust and the Remote Laundries project, Men’s Mondays, has provided a culturally safe and private men’s washing service with the laundry run by male staff for the day.
Laundry team members also participated in the Heart Foundation’s Champions4Change program, a culturally safe program designed to help eradicate rheumatic heart disease (RHD) by building knowledge about the environmental factors that contribute to RHD, such as skin sores and scabies and the preventative actions and protections that prevent the spread.
The Angurugu laundry is owned by Groote Eylandt Aboriginal Trust and managed by Aboriginal Investment Group. As a partnership, we will deliver the third laundry to Groote Eylandt in Umbakumba later this year.
